It is located 873 km from Tehran and 100 km south to Orumyeh. Mahabad is cold in mountainous areas and mild in the plains and forests. It was formerly Savojbolagh Mokri. In 1038 AH, near the end of Shah Abbas ruling time, it was the capital city of the local government and many noteworthy buildings were constructed over there. Presently, many eye-catching historical sight-seeings exist in this township of which the followings are mentioned historical caves belonging Orartoi period, Median city of Anderghash, Achaemenian crypt of Daka in Anderghash and Mausoleum of Bedaghol-Sultan in south-west to Mahabad
